Portable Tools and Equipment
Most people, by the time they’re experienced enough at reloading to teach others, have a pretty impressive array of equipment. With a room full of equipment it gets hard to remember the early days using a Lee Loader and having only the bare essentials. I’ve got one die that perfectly illustrates the simplicity of the “old days.”
This is about as basic as it gets. It includes a full-length sizing die and bullet seating rod. With this and a way to measure the powder you have all you need (except components) to reload a 30/06 cartridge.
My only regret is that they don’t make these anymore. I bought this one at a pawn shop 40 years ago and I’ve never seen another one since!
The next step up is the Lee Loader. These are available virtually everywhere and are a great way to get started reloading ammunition. They include everything needed to deprime and prime the case, resize the neck, measure the powder and seat (and crimp) the bullet. I paid $23.99 plus shipping for mine in December, 2012. They do a fine job at a great price and everything fits inside the plastic case. Because they only neck size bottle neck cases (instead of full-length sizing) you’ll only be able to use your reloads in the same gun they were fired in. You may also have problems with oversize cases in lever action, pump and semi-auto firearms. The good thing is that your loads will be light and case life should be excellent using a Lee Loader.
